Polka dots

"A polka dot has the form of the sun which is a symbol of the energy of the whole world, and also the form of the moon which is calm. Round, soft, colorful, senseless and unknowing. Polka dots can't stay alone, like communicative life of people, two and three and more polka dots become movement. Our earth is only one polka dot among a million stars in the cosmos. Polka dots are a way to infinity. When we obliterate nature and our bodies with polka dots, we become part of the unity of our environment. I become part of the eternal, and we obliterate ourselves in Love...Humans are not merely tiny worms even in the vast, eternal universe. They constitute an infinite net of shining polka dots. By Self-Obliteration of myself as a polka dot, my soul will go through incarnations and turn into one of the eternal polka dots in the universe."

-Yayoi Kusama

  1. I saw a Kusama retrospective last year in Sydney, and not knowing anything about the artist, it really surprised me how moved and haunted I was by her work. I felt lonely inside her universe. Powerful stuff...
